Legendary Bollywood actor Dev Anand is a pioneer of the Hindi film industry. His contribution to the entertainment industry needs no introduction, but do you know about the Punjabi connection of the magnum-opus actor.
In an earlier interview, Dev Anand had once revealed that he was born in Punjab’s Gurdaspur. One of the primary languages spoken at his home was Punjabi, apart from Hindi and English. He went on to recall that his father would take him to Himachal’s Dalhousie where he did his graduation from the Convent.
For the unversed, Anand was born Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand on 26 September 1923 in the Shakargarh tehsil of the Gurdaspur district in Punjab, British India (now Narowal District, Punjab, Pakistan).
His father Pishori Lal Anand was a prominent lawyer in Gurdaspur District Court. Dev was the third of four sons born to Anand. He did his schooling till matriculation from Sacred Heart School, Dalhousie (then in Punjab), and went to Government College Dharamshala before going to Lahore to study. Later, Dev completed a B.A. degree in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore in British India.
The Guide actor revealed he wanted to pursue post-graduation after completing graduation. However, his father didn’t have enough money so he turned towards acting. The late actor had recalled coming to Mumbai with Rs. 30 in his pocket.
