Cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, known for his explosive sixes and unshakeable resilience on the field, is now embracing life beyond the boundary with just as much spirit. In a heartwarming and hilarious interview with his mother, Shabnam Singh shared tales from Yuvraj’s childhood, painting a picture of a boy who was equal parts adorable and exasperating.
“He’s been extremely mischievous since his childhood—and it’s only gotten worse with age!” she laughed. Recounting one of his many pranks, she said, “I once got a call from the police station saying he had misbehaved with some girls. I rushed over, panicked—only to find out it was a prank call. And of course, he was behind it. He loves making a fool out of me.”
Yuvraj, grinning beside her, quipped, “Whoever’s fed mom these lines has done a brilliant job.”
But behind the jokes lies a story of grit and sacrifice. Yuvraj opened up about his difficult relationship with his father, former cricketer Yograj Singh, who was known for his strict, almost militaristic approach to Yuvraj’s training. “He was harsh at times, but it was his dream that I live his dream,” Yuvraj reflected. “There were moments I didn’t like it, but sometimes you need to do things you don’t enjoy to realise what you really want. I was pushed hard—and that’s why I made it to Team India at 18.”
The contrast between his upbringing and his own parenting philosophy is stark. Speaking about his bond with his son Orion, Yuvraj said, “With my father, it was only about cricket. I don’t want to be a coach to my kids—I want to be a dad. The things I missed with my father, I want to do with my son.”
When asked about his most cherished career memory, Yuvraj didn’t pick the six sixes or the World Cup win. Instead, he recalled his breakout innings of 84 against Australia as a teenager. “I had just played this incredible match, and when I landed in India, both my parents—who were separated—came to the airport to receive me. That moment… that was magic. One of the most amazing moments of my life.”
Through it all, Yuvraj remains refreshingly grounded—embracing fatherhood, business, and the occasional prank on his mom with equal parts charm and candour. Whether he’s behind the bat, at the kitchen pass, or just pulling a fast one on his family, Yuvraj Singh continues to be a class act—on and off the pitch.
