The world of entertainment has always been a melting pot of stories—some scripted for the screen, others destined for real life. One such fascinating tale is that of Dan Dhanoa and Nandita Puri. Both alumni of the prestigious Doon School, or “Doscos” as they are fondly called, their paths crossed much later in life, leading to a union as unique as their individual journeys.
Two Contrasting Worlds
Dan Dhanoa and Nandita Puri couldn’t be more different in the characters they portrayed. Dan, with his towering presence and rugged looks, became synonymous with the quintessential Bollywood villain. From Mard to Tridev and Karma, his menacing aura was unforgettable. Nandita, on the other hand, embodied grace and warmth, portraying homely characters on television in shows like Itihaas and Milan. But beyond their on-screen personas lies a story of reinvention and shared passion.

Acting was not the first love for either of them. Dan Dhanoa began his career as a sailor in the merchant navy, navigating the seas before finding himself drawn to the glamour of Bollywood. His entry into films was almost accidental.
During the premiere of one of his movies, he caught the attention of the legendary Feroz Khan, who offered him a role. But it wasn’t until Manmohan Desai cast him as the antagonist in Mard opposite Amitabh Bachchan that Dan embraced acting wholeheartedly.
Nandita, born to classical dancer Promila Puri, spent her formative years in Calcutta, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and even England. Trained in Kathak under the illustrious Padma Shri Roshan Kumari, she initially pursued a career in classical dance. Her artistry connected her to the world of acting, where she left her mark in television and films. Dan’s personal life has been as eventful as his professional journey.

Previously married to model and actress Nikki Walia, he has a son from that marriage. After a decade in Bollywood, he returned to his first love—the sea—and resumed his career as a sailor. It was during 2007 that fate brought Dan and Nandita together. The couple quickly realized their shared dreams and complementary energies, tying the knot within months of their meeting.

Their conscious detachment from their acting past has allowed them to craft a life that reflects their passions more authentically—art, dance, and meaningful connections.
The couple relocated to Chandigarh, a city that Nandita initially found lacking in artistic vibrancy compared to Mumbai. Rather than lamenting this gap, they decided to bridge it. Dan, an avid art collector, began organizing art workshops, transforming their home into a hub for creativity.
Their residence, Anchorage 42, now doubles as a homestay, offering guests a unique blend of hospitality and culture. While Dan has largely stayed away from acting, he made a notable comeback with his role in Soorarai Pottru, later reprising it in its Hindi remake Sarfira. His character, inspired by Vijay Mallya, showcased his enduring talent. Nandita continues to train students in Kathak and occasionally appears in television serials.
Despite their busy schedules, Dan and Nandita prioritize spending quality time together. Travel serves as their shared escape, allowing them to explore new places and recharge away from the limelight.
Though their residence in the heart of the Punjabi film industry might suggest otherwise, neither has ventured into Punjabi projects. Perhaps, this conscious detachment from their acting past has allowed them to craft a life that reflects their passions more authentically—art, dance, and meaningful connections.
Looking Ahead
Dan Dhanoa and Nandita Puri are proof that life after the spotlight can be just as fulfilling, if not more. Their journey, filled with twists and turns, stands as a testament to the power of reinvention, the richness of art, and the beauty of shared dreams.
In a world obsessed with fame, this duo has found joy in simplicity, creativity, and each other—a story as compelling as any they’ve portrayed on screen.
