Sidhu Moosewala Termed 'Public Safety Risk', Removed From 5X Festival Line Up!

By: Gurleen | June 12, 2019

5X Festival is billed as “a South Asian millennial festival showcasing the best of music, art, film and fashion” is scheduled this year from June 12 to 16. The festival’s flagship event is a free 5X Block Party at Surrey’s Central City Plaza on Saturday, June 15 from 3 to 9 p.m, with performances by Jaz Dhami, Mickey Singh, Raja Kumari, Intense, Malinder Tooray and DJs Apogee, Impact and Arsenal, in collaboration with Decibel Entertainment.

This list had earlier got the first name as Sidhu Moosewala but his fans were left shocked when the organisers shared an update that Moosewala will not be performing at the venue anymore. The reason that they wrote came as a surprise.

The official handles of 5X festival quoted, "Due to circumstances outside of our control, Sidhu Moose Wala will not be joining us at the 5X Block Party this year. The Surrey RCMP have deemed him a security risk. Although we disagree, we have removed him from the lineup in order to proceed with the festival.

We’re just as disappointed as you are. TRUST! We worked very hard to put this amazing gig together. That said, we still have FOUR HEADLINERS on the bill for the 5X Block Party including Mickey Singh, Raja Kumari, Jaz Dhami and Intense - and the full might of the Decibel crew.

We cannot wait to see you. Your week starts Wed June 12 at the dontdoze Art Party and continues until June 16 at 5X Creates."

Last year the 5X Block party saw more than 10,000 attendees for performances by Sharry Mann, Jasmine Sandlas and more.

Sidhu was removed from the artists' line of this year by the organizers of Metro Vancouver’s 5X Festival over concerns from the RCMP. If you remember, earlier this year a stabbing incident was reported at the singer's concert in Surrey which landed a man in the hospital and another gunshot incident was reported at his show in Calgary.

Reported by DailyEntXpress, the statement by Tarun Nayar, Exec Director Vancouver Internation Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) went like: “The Surrey RCMP have deemed Sidhu a public safety risk and asked that he be removed from the festival."

While many think that such stern actions are necessary to avoid unfortunate incidents, there are others who opine that Sidhu became an easy target and there are many other global artists who have performed way more provocative and illicit songs than what our Punjabi artist has been blamed for.

The festival is planned by Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC), a charity founded in 2004 and based in Vancouver.
