In our Punjabi entertainment industry its normal for Punjabi singers to venture into the acting field. The trend was always there. Though even in the period of 80s and 90s many singers tried their hands at acting but only Gurdas Maan got major success as the lead actor. Except Malkit Singh, who had done the lead role in a Punjabi film, most other singers were given either supporting, negative or guest appearance roles in films. Some of such singers are Mohd Sadiq, Kuldeep Manak, Gurcharan Pohli, Surinder Shinda, Chamkila, Sardool Sikander, Hans Raj Hans, Surjit Bindrakhiya, Pammi Bai, Dilshad Akhtar, and more.
Harbhajan Maan came and changed the whole scenario for many of his junior singers. Much before Harbhajan Maan, a popular singer was all set for his acting career in the year 1996. But it took him two decades to finally see himself on the big screen! Balkar Sidhu was still in college when his first album 'Karna Chadd De Pyar' released. It was followed by 'Din Papera De', 'Gall Taan Bandi', and more. Much before he got stardom with his chartbuster Maajhe Diye Mombattiye, he was offered a film called Jagira which had Sukhjinder Shera, Gugni Gill, Payal Gill (Gugni's sister), BN Sharma and others in important roles. Balkar shot for the first schedule in the year 1996. For the second schedule, Balkar insisted that the film's actor-director & producer Sukhjinder Shera pays him his due amount. Sukhjinder Shera reasoned going by trend of industry that many actors offer money to the makers for lead roles int heir films so Balkar should be thankful as he had been given a lead role that too for free, besides the fact that he was so raw as an actor.
This did not go down well with Balkar and he walked out of the film in no time. Sukhjinder Shera then signed actor Paramjit Gill as his replacement. Paramjit later worked in films like Jag Jiyondean De Mele, Mirza The Untold Story, etc. Balkar soon shifted his entire focus on his musical career. His next albums 'Aaja Ganne Chuppiye', 'Do Gallan', 'Mehndi', 'Phulkari', etc, were all pretty successful. Then came a time, when having a Punjabi singer as the lead hero of a Punjabi film became a mandate.
Bollywood Singer Announces 1 Lakh Reward For Preet Harpal's Blackface! He then signed an NRI producer’s film 'Desi Munde' which was based on the subject of illegal immigration of Punjabi youngsters. Noted director Mandeep Beniwal was to helm the project. But within a week's time, he walked out of the project. Next one to exit was actress Gurleen Chopra, who was working opposite Balkar. In an interview, without taking any names she took a dig at the makers for spending lavishly on singers who couldn't even act but refused to pay her stating that the film's budget did not allow them to.
VIDEO Desi Munde was almost shelved but got revived with Isha Rikhi replaced Gurleen Chopra. Finally, after a lot of delays and hurdles, this film got released in the year 2016. Balkar was seen playing a college student in Jagira, which was started in 1996 and surprisingly, even after 20 years, he was still shown as a college student in Desi Munde. Some experts felt that Desi Munde had a good subject gone wrong with bad treatment and unrealistic acting of Balkar Sidhu. Desi Munde had Parikshit Sahni, Daljit Kaur, Jatin Grewal, Isha Rikhi, Gauri Singh, Sonpreet Jawandha and Raza Murad in lead roles. After singing and acting, Balkar even tried his hand at politics by joining AAP party but was soon expelled from it. Balkar last released the recreation of his cult song Maajhe Diye Mombattiye.
