Singer Daler Mehndi spoke about Diljit Dosanjh’s recent success but shared his disappointment over Diljit cutting his hair for the film Amar Singh Chamkila. The movie, which received acclaim earlier this year, featured Diljit portraying the slain folk singer Chamkila, known for his controversial lyrics.
Daler revealed that Chamkila’s music, filled with double meanings, was banned in his household during his childhood. The film also touched on Chamkila’s contentious career and his tragic murder in 1988 by gunmen during a show in Mehsampur, Punjab.
In a recent interview, Daler recalled Chamkila’s fame, saying, “He was a trendy new singer in the market. He earned a name for himself. But basically 99% of his songs were double-meaning. My parents wouldn’t allow me to sing those songs at home.”
Daler Mehndi questioned Diljit Dosanjh’s decision to cut his hair for Amar Singh Chamkila, despite often presenting himself as a devoted Sikh. He commented, “I don’t understand. He keeps saying that he will never remove his pagdi, he presents himself as a devotee… But I don’t understand why he cut his hair for the Chamkila movie. I don’t think he should’ve done it. I have a big movie coming up myself, and I’m keeping my pagdi.”
