Social media influencer Deepika Luthra from Amritsar has deleted her Instagram account after receiving threats linked to the recent killing of fellow influencer Kanchan Kumari in Bathinda. The threats reportedly came from Amritpal Singh Mehron, the main accused in Kumari’s murder, and other fringe outfits who had objected to Deepika’s social media content.
Even though the Punjab Police have stepped up security at her residence, Deepika deactivated her Instagram handle, citing persistent threats. The Amritsar police have arrested one person in connection with these threats, while the search for Mehron continues.
Mehron, along with two accomplices, allegedly murdered Kanchan Kumari last week and later fled to the UAE, according to SSP Bathinda Avneet Kondal.
In response to the incident, Punjab Aam Aadmi Party president and minister Aman Arora urged the public not to panic. Speaking to India Today, he said, “Nobody needs to get scared like this in Punjab. The state police is very much active and alert to take action against such self-styled social vigilantes.” He also called on social media influencers to be mindful of the content they post.
The threats to Deepika Luthra follow a broader pattern of intimidation against social media figures in Punjab, with several influencers reportedly receiving similar messages after Kumari’s murder.
The developments have raised concerns about the safety of online personalities and the growing trend of online vigilantism.
As investigations continue, Punjab Police remain on high alert and have assured the public of swift action against those inciting fear and targeting individuals for their digital presence.
