Back in 2008 when NDTV launched a channel - NDTV imagine - they telecasted a new singing TV reality show called ‘Junoon kuch kar dikhane ka’ which had multiple teams and three judges including - Ustaad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Ila Arun, and Anand Raj Anand. In this reality show, the public came across a new face under the Sufi team- Harshdeep Kaur- a turbaned singer.

The story behind turban

When everyone saw a girl singing with a turban on, they loved the look and loved the fact that she is respecting her art. When Harshdeep was participating in Junoon, she wanted to cover her head due to religious purposes, at that point she thought of covering her head with a chunni but her brother-in-law suggested her to try a turban on. On his suggestion, she went ahead with it and today it has become a part of her identity.

How her journey began

Harshdeep’s journey began when she was just 5 years old. One fine day when she was watching TV in the living room her father heard her sing some song in full rhythm and he was amazed to hear a little child singing in such melody thus he asked her to sing again. Harshdeep happily sang the song again, in her melodious voice. Her father, who was part of a music band in his young years and was the owner of a music instruments’ manufacturing company, decided to make her learn music.

Musical Paradise

Harshdeep remembers from her childhood that she loved playing with the piano keyboards, and other musical instruments, her house was always full of different musical instruments since her father owned a musical instrument manufacturing company. She watched a lot of TV to listen to songs. On the top her father enrolled her in Sri Tejpal Singh’s classes to learn shastriya sangeet and she learned a lot there. When Harshdeep was 12 years old she participated in a competition held by MTV called ‘MTV Video Gaga’ and although she wasn’t selected due to age restrictions, she was called again when she was 14 to take part. Luckily she won the show and at the age of 16 she had her first full album released. Her family supported her so much that they shifted from Delhi to Mumbai to push forward her playback singing career.

Isn’t it lovely when your whole family decides to take life-changing steps to support your dreams?
