A proposal has been submitted to the City of Brampton to build a monument at Chinguacousy Park in honour of the 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment who fought bravely in the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897.
The initiative, led by the Saragarhi Foundation Canada Inc., aims to create a lasting memorial recognizing the soldiers’ courage and sacrifice.
“We kindly request city council’s endorsement and support in moving this project forward,” wrote Dr. Kuljit Singh Janjua, Vice-Chair of the Foundation, in a letter to councillors.
The Foundation noted that Brampton, home to one of the largest Sikh and South Asian communities outside India, is an ideal location for such a tribute.
The proposal has been referred to city staff for review, with plans to ensure the monument reflects both historical accuracy and community values.
If approved, the memorial will serve as a symbol of remembrance, diversity, and education for generations to come.
