Navjot Singh also known as Isapuria Virk was murdered in Mohali back in 2018. Nearly six years after his killing, Mohali district police on Friday arrested his killer and said that he had an accomplice, who died a year ago.
“Today, after 6 years, the killers of Singer Navjot Singh @ Isapuria Virk have been arrested. Justice has been served,” Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on X, formerly Twitter.
Singh was found dead with a bullet injury on Barwala Road in Dera Bassi on May 27, 2018.
Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Garg said that the killers were identified as Abhishek alias Rajat Rana and Saurav. They were the members of the Uttar Pradesh-based Rahul Khatta gang and wanted to steal the singer’s car, he added. While Rana was arrested, Saurav died of a drug overdose last year, the police said.
“We worked on many angles but did not find any personal enmity motive. During the investigation, it came to light that on the day of the murder, the victim was returning home from his music class when the accused stopped the car. In a bid to snatch the car, the accused fired at least four gunshots at the victim and left him dead on the spot,” SSP Garg said.
The 22-year-old singer was found dead near a factory plot in Dera Bassi town of Mohali district in 2018. He had been shot from close range and had suffered five gunshot wounds. His car was found parked nearby. He had been living in a rented apartment in Mohali.
