Punjabi cinema has been growing and how. Gone are the times when movies would only revolve around rural life or brain drain. The positive response has infused faith among filmmakers to experiment and bring women on the forefront. Let’s take a look at some of the movies that have been led by female.
Ikk Kudi Punjab Di
The 2010 released Ikk Kudi Punjab Di was way ahead of its time. The film led by Amrinder Gill and debutant Jaspinder Cheema is a worth-watch. The film narrated the story of Sehajpal Singh who finds her dream girl in Navdeep. However, Navdeep being a single daughter refuses to marry for the sake of her parents. Not only the storyline but also the music of the film was widely-applauded.
Needhi Singh
The 2016 released marked the comeback of Kulraj Randhawa in the Punjabi industry. The film was based on a serious and intense subject. The story narrated the story of fun-loving Needhi, whose life takes a tragic turn after her best friends fell prey to sexual harassment. A must-watch film, but remains an under-rated one.
Gelo
The 2016 released Gelo film featured Jaspinder Cheema in the key role alongside Gurjeet Singh. The formidable performance of the actress is a delightful watch. Though the film couldn’t do much wonders at the box-office but it surely turned cupid for the lead stars who went to marry after the film.
Angrej
The movie released in 2015 is surely one of its kind. The film that marked Sargun Mehta’s debut in the industry featured her as a strong woman. Her character had a sweet and tangy touch bound to appeal the audiences. It was the beauty of her character who knew the consequences of what will happen if she hurts her dear ones. Her maturity and sense make Dhann Kaur a special one indeed.
Surkhi Bindi
As the title suggests, led by Sargu Mehta and Gurnam Bhullar, this story narrated the story of a woman who served as an excellent role model who often give up on their dreams for various reasons. In the film, Sargun’s Rano aspired to move to Canada and works hard to achieve her goal, despite not knowing what fate has in store for her. The urge to live one’s dream irrespective of whatever the situation is what makes her character worth-applauding.
Channo: Kamli Yaar Di
Neeru Bajwa who has been in the industry for a very long time finally got the chance to work in a female centric, Channo: Kamli Yaar Di. In the film, she played the role of a pregnant woman who travels to Canada in search of her husband, the story and her character were difficult to portray. With this iconic role of Neeru Bajwa, our expectations are more from her and we want to see her in more roles like this.
Ardab Mutiyaaran
Sonam Bajwa is indisputably the biggest actress in Punjabi industry. Among her other roles, the actress’ performance as Babbu Bains became a role model for many. She portrayed a strong and independent woman in the film who marries a man and struggles to live life on her own terms. She is a symbol for all women who fight for their right to self-determination, freedom, and regulation.
